- Discussions for joint improvement; work groups:
The first things to miss if you do not attend SID are of course the fruitful discussions and resolutions crafted in each work group. This year, the five organized work groups are the following:
WG2- Marketing Plan
WG4- 70th Anniversary & IAESTE Day
WG5- Relations with international organizations/companies
Networking within the IAESTE network is the basis for future cooperation and well-functioning of the organization on a global level. Getting to know people from various counties, at different positions might bring you to a benefit of expanding your knowledge and learning from the success of others. In addition, networking provides you with a great source of connections, and opens the door for future opportunities both as an individual, and as a delegation– a benefit abundantly provided only by SID and similar IAESTE seminars.
- Innovation, Ideas
By attending SID, you get a chance to be a part of the newest IAESTE International plans for action. You get to present your ideas and work together with other delegates from all around the world for the sake of providing the best possible solution to a given problem as well as crafting a field for action to be carried out in all 87 IAESTE Countries. Locating the specific IAESTE branch that could undergo improvement, discussing it with other delegates and defining a framework of possible effective solutions might bring you to the benefit of expanding your span of ideas and ways of approaching a specific problem.
Moreover, you will be able to work with other coordinators for the given workgroup and get to know the ways of functioning of their National Committee, in addition to broadening your view for eventual ways of improvement of your own national committee.
- The Balkan Experience
Besides the hard work during work group sessions, there will be the relaxed cocktail and international and dinner nights during the seminar, with an accent on the 05.05.2017, when the International Evening will take place. First of all, the international evening will be held in an authentic han in the Skopje Old Bazaar called Suli An, a place we are all very excited about. Secondly, you will be able to see a traditional folk music dance group and try dancing the ‘Oro’- the Macedonian traditional dance and clothing. In addition, you will be able to feel the Balkan spirit- the way we eat, the way we party, the way we drink and the way we get things done.
- Old vs New Skopje
Skopje is a city with both old traditional and new architecture. Missing SID would also mean missing the city tour planned for the 06.05 in which you can see the clash between the old buildings and objects, dating from the reign of Justinian I, and the Ottoman Republic, to the new Baroque outlook of the city since year 2014. Many tourists say that there are more statues than people in Skopje since 2014, so you will get to see firsthand why people might say so.
During the city tour, there will be two tour-guides which will lead you through the Skopje Experience, and which you can ask for more historical information anytime.
- Macedonian Cuisine
As you might have seen in the previous posts, we, Macedonians are very proud of our traditional food and gladly say that Macedonia is becoming a foodie destination. As described by VOGUE no matter where you go, every meal is made with passion and love—whether it’s at a hole-in-the-wall in the middle of Skopje or the living room of a farmer in a local village. Not only that, the focus is entirely on quality—which means everything is made from scratch without the additives and preservatives. Upon arrival in Skopje, you will be able to taste some of the traditional recipes such as, makalo [creamy garlic dip], or spinach börek, pindjur (a relish made from tomatoes, eggplant, garlic, salt, and pepper), kifli (flaky pastries), or roasted pork with Macedonian paprika.
- Park Hotel
You probably have already seen the photos of Park Hotel and Spa, the hotel in which Delegates are going to stay during the Seminar. Located in the Skopje city park, this hotel epitomizes the essence of harmonious, yet sleek shapes and colors in an alluring and sophisticated place which makes it the first choice in the search for luxurious and comfortable stay.
The unique atmosphere of Park Hotel & Spa, with an impeccable choice of art objects intertwined amidst the city park greenery, provides you with the best experience of being a guest at the crossroad of the Balkan region.
Although the Seminar is organized in the heart of Skopje, you will still be able to take a glimpse of our beautiful nature and countryside. Whether it is from the window seat in the trip from the airport, or during the walk to the work group locations, Skopje in spring is an experience and is not to be missed. Park Hotel & Spa itself is surrounded by the greenery of the City Park and features a sun terrace by the river Vardar, the biggest and longest river in Macedonia. Moreover, if the weather serves us well, the coffee breaks will be organized in the park within the University Campus near the place where the workgroups will be held.
- Local people
The Macedonian people are some of the world’s most welcoming according to Macedonian people. Jokes aside, you might have or haven’t heard, but the locals are considered very charismatic, friendly and heartwarming, assets you will be able to feel for yourself as you land on Macedonian soil.
The local committee Skopje is a big committee with more than 50 active members you will be able to communicate, laugh, and work together with.
- Matka kanyon
As we have previously mentioned, Macedonia has a countryside that will leave you out of breath. Last but not least on 07.05. you will have the chance to visit the Canyon and Lake Matka, the oldest artificial lake in the country. Matka is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in Macedonia and a gorge in which a rich complex of mediaeval building are to be found, including churches, monasteries and remnants of a fortress (the mediaeval town of Matka). There are dozens of caves and large number of endemic plants and animals. The Canyon covers an area of around 5.000ha and is located 15km south-west of Skopje. By its morphogenetic characteristic, it is a breakthrough gorge. Whether you like beautiful views, kayaking or just walking around, you’ll have plenty of ways to enjoy some adventure, recreation and peaceful ambient provided by the sounds of the nature.
